Artist were chosen based on their cultural immersion and appropriation of the idea of the exotic. The objects are gathered together to evoke a sense of mystery, questioning the very fabric of the existence of the cabinet, its message, and it’s relevance in today’s contemporary world.

‘Safari’ is the first solo overview of Atladóttir & d’Ors’ collaborative projects The First Collection and The Independent Republic of Bellona.

Since early 2010 Atladóttir & d’Ors work together on The First Collection, a multidisciplinary project positioned within the boundaries of art and avantgarde fashion. Framed as a thematic collection Atladóttir d’Ors make costumes, photos, videos and installations using a colorful, crafted aesthetic to create scenographies inspired by news, popular culture and scientific imagery.

The collection reflects the fascination of the artists for traditional clothing, modern technology versus primitive natural forces, contemporary social dilemmas and unbalanced situations. They show this in a visual dialogue of diversity, change, emancipation and female identity within the context of globalization.

The parallel project The Independent Republic of Bellona is a visual research of a utopian country: the Republic of Bellona, an anthropological study through traditional clothing and customs of a pre-technological/post-industrial society in a fictional land inhabited and run by women. With the Republic of Bellona Atladóttir & d’Ors research terms as tradition, emancipation and independence.

Grimmuseum is teaming up with Tupajumi Foundation for the second time to organize a new FITAX Art Exchange, offering an alternative way of wheeling and dealing art during the Berlin art fair week.

Goal of the event is the direct exchange of art works between collectors (or collecting artists) without any intermediate. The artworks can be made by or owned by the applicant. Selected collectors and artists can trade one piece of art for another of the same estimated value. No money involved!

The works of over 50 participants can be seen at Grimmuseum from September 8 till September 11, when the trade will take place.

At the moment, gentrification processes affect Neukölln perhaps more than any other neighbourhood in Berlin. Cheap rents attract artists and culture workers, who often provide, wanting to or not, their contribution to the gentrification process, as they culturally upgrade the neighbourhood. This is as such not a bad thing, but if the artists are instrumentalised for the purpose of price increases and evictions, a conflict arises. Also Gitte Bohr as non-commercial space feels affected by the involuntary creation of symbolic capital. Because of this, Gitte Bohr offers a review and critical discussion of the situation in the form of an info-exhibition with artistic contributions (a.o. Atladóttir & d’Ors) and events.

Grimmuseum
Fichte Straße 2
Berlin
Opening 7pm, auction 9pm

For the exhibition “Unfolding: Process” at the Grimmuseum, The First Collection (Atladóttir & d’Ors) has occupied a section of Grimmuseum, using it as an improvised studio to work on a piece around the issue of Gentrification. For the final week, an advertisement has been posted on one of the many popular websites for renting rooms and apartments in Berlin. During the finnissage on 11 June 2011, the house will also be put up for sale in a live auction.

http://www.immobilienscout24.de

Paced in coordination with the three-week show, they have gradually constructed and furnished a house out of prefabricated building material, paint and cut cardboard. Surrounding this structure is a changing display. For the first two weeks, there was an accumulation of newspaper articles and publications from local anti-gentrification groups on an adjacent wall and a video piece titled “3” (2009) by Icelandic artist, Habby Osk was played on a monitor hung in the space for the second part of the show.
