Galerie Jaap Sleper (founded by Jaap Sleper, 1972) shows solo exhibitions of contemporary (inter-) national art. The gallery’s objective is to support new developments in art by creating space for the development of artists and their, more often socially critical work.
The gallery has the explicit ambition to become a ground breaking gallery. It amplifies the boundaries of the art by organizing alternative art fairs and creating exhibition places for young talents in architectural places. Under the name Blue Episode Foundation talented artists generate site-specific work answering to the question: How would you react to an architectural space that is being transformed by renovation or rebuild?
Alternative art fairs Re:Amsterdam / Re:Rotterdam are a ‘reply’ to certain practices within the art. It is a re-ordering of the art fair, market and the establishments surrounding them. A re-focusing. The side events that act as a counter-point to other more established events. Bringing vitality and daring back into the fold.
Galerie Jaap Sleper explores the boundaries of the dialogue; with as a result art within the context of a gallery, fair or architectural space.

The exhibition ‘Wish you were here’ showcases an ambiguous and contradictory feeling; the longing feeling when experiencing absence and the anticipation of reunion. From staring at a screen by yourself for hours, looking at the whole world enjoying themselves to these moments of bliss when you become part of the world’s joy. The addiction to a continuous urge for connection results into a state of loneliness that can only be broken by (in)tangible contact with (the) other(s). This romantic idea cherishes both a nostalgic longing for the past as pressure to perform, fear, hope and insecure expectations for the future.
Moderators Stefan Tijs (1976), Roosmarijn Mascini (1985) and Nicola Kirkaldy (1983) turned this nostalgic longing into an exhibition and publication. 32 international contemporary artists were invited to interpret the ambiguous title Wish You Were Here and use it as a starting point for creating new work. In the form of postcards these 32 images are bundled into a publication under the same name. Which due to its analogue, printed form opposes modern times or meanwhile perhaps is entirely current again. The publication is presented during the opening of the exhibition on Friday July 27th. The exhibition shows the original works of the artists and performances.
